How PMM Can Help You Earn LEED® Points

USGBC

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification has become the gold standard as the rating system that measures the sustainability of new or existing buildings. For facility managers, pursuing LEED certification offers numerous advantages that extend beyond environmental benefits, enhancing operational efficiency and organizational reputation.

Whether you are hoping to achieve LEED certification or just using their standards to increase your building's efficiency, save money, and do good for the environment, PMM has built-in processes to help you earn the last few points needed.

Energy and Water Efficiency and Waste Management are the best places to start for LEED Operations and Maintenance: Existing Buildings, also known as LEED O+M, certifications and require some level of building benchmarking or previous consumption data. The newest version of the LEED O+M: Existing Buildings category includes a key update: Green Seal-certified cleaning products and materials can now help facilities earn 2 points toward LEED certification. This means that certified green cleaning products can account for 5% of the 40 points buildings need to earn the minimum-level LEED certification.

This is great news for PMM customers as ALL PMM janitorial customers' facilities are already cleaned using GreenSeal-certified products!

PMM’s Facilities Management and Maintenance group can also assist in the following areas:

Energy Efficiency

  • Conducting regular energy audits and implementing improvements.

  • Optimizing HVAC controls through scheduling and controls.

  • Upgrading lighting fixtures to high-efficiency LED options.

  • Monitoring and tracking energy consumption.

Water Efficiency

  • Installing low-flow plumbing fixtures in bathrooms and kitchen areas.

  • Using rainwater harvesting systems for irrigation and gardening in your outdoor spaces.

  • Monitoring and tracking water consumption.

Waste Management

  • Establishing waste reduction programs with your tenants.

  • Diverting waste streams like paper, plastics, and electronics.

  • Educating tenants on proper waste disposal practices.

Indoor Environmental Air Quality (IEQ)

  • Performing regular air filtration and ventilation checks.

  • Monitoring CO2 levels and adjusting ventilation accordingly.

  • Providing access to natural lighting and optimizing lighting controls.

Incorporating LEED certification is a win-win for facility managers—delivering cost efficiency, operational excellence, and sustainability leadership. It’s not just a trend but a wise investment in the future.
